Volunteer Opportunities

Have you ever wondered what an archaeologist does after the digging is over? The real work begins after the excavation… in the laboratory. The Archaeological Research Laboratory is committed to providing opportunities to the the public to learn about and become involved with archaeology in our region.

We are always glad to have volunteers, who work in our various labs alongside our archaeologists and lab technicians, helping process samples, wash prehistoric and historic artifacts, and prepare artifacts for curation. Individuals can volunteer during our regular business hours, Monday through Friday between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, as fits in their personal schedules.

We are also launching a monthly Volunteer Day in coordination with TVA Cultural Resources, where volunteers help prepare artifacts collected from the Normandy Reservoir for curation (rebagging, recording, and reboxing prehistoric artifacts). Volunteers can sign up for the morning session (9 am – 12 pm) or afternoon session (1 pm – 4 pm), and join us for a brown-bag lunch lecture at noon, when archaeologists from UT and TVA will give a talk on local archaeology.

To sign up for Volunteer Day or other volunteer opportunities, contact Kandi Hollenbach: (865) 974-9647 or kdh@utk.edu.
