The ARL Logo Explained
 

The ARL logo is derived from a petroglyph of a "bird of prey" effigy holding two maces.

This glyph is part of a larger panel depicting four human and bird effigies:

  1. monolithic axe with woodpecker characteristics
  2. "bird of prey" effigy
  3. monolithic axe with human characteristics
  4. crowned mace with avian characteristics (Simek, et al. 2001)

 

The panel dates to the Mississippian period (A.D. 1300-1400) from the 11th Unnamed Cave, Tennessee. The original is approximately 50 cm high.
